In our opinion, both! Booking a table and ordering a meal in Serbia is more than just getting food—it’s a social ritual. Whether you’re calling ahead to reserve a spot for a family lunch (with baby chairs and non-smoking preferences) or paying the bill with a business invoice, we put an effort for this lesson covers every single step of the restaurant experience. Part 1: Making a Phone Reservation for the Restaurant (Rezervacija restorana)

Before diving into the menu, let’s make sure you get a table! To be honest, we are sure that calling on the phone can feel intimidating, but this straightforward dialogue will make it effortless.

🎒 The Survival Kit: Vocab Lista

Don’t stress about memorizing the whole menu. Instead, save these key phrases and words for navigating Serbian restaurants

• Za koliko osoba? – For how many people?
• Hranilica za bebe – High chair for babies
• Deo za nepušače / pušače – Non-smoking / Smoking section
• Imate li neku preporuku? – Do you have any recommendations?
• Nema greške – You can’t go wrong (A very common Serbian expression for a safe, great choice!)
• I ja ću isto – I’ll have the same.
• Kisela voda – Sparkling mineral water (In Serbia, if you just say “voda”, they will usually bring still water).
• Kugla sladoleda – Scoop of ice cream
• Gotovinski račun (sa PIB-om) – Business receipt issued with a company tax ID number (Essential for expats running a business in Serbia!)
• Napojnica / Bakšiš – Tip / Tipping
• Da li je ovaj sto slobodan? – Is this table free?
• Trenutno je sve zauzeto, možete li doći malo kasnije? – We are fully booked at the moment. Can you come a bit later?
• Ovamo./Za mnom. – Please come this way.
• Može li časa obične vode? – Can I get a glass of tap water, please?

💡 Pro Tip for Expats: If you own a company registered in Serbia (DOO or Preduzetnik) and you are having a business lunch, always ask for a “gotovinski račun” and have your PIB (Tax ID) written down in your phone notes. The waiter will issue a tax invoice that your accountant can use!
